Crime Watch Meeting Update

16 Feb

Dear Neighbors,

I want to thank everyone for attending the Emergency Crime Watch meeting held on 02/07/2012; it was great to see a lot of familiar and some new faces.  I was proud & happy to see so many people take part to become aware of what is happening here in San Sebastian. The Altamonte Police Department was on hand at this meeting to provide as much information as possible and to answer a lot of questions and concerns of the attendees.

We wanted everyone to be aware of the recent rash of break-ins we have had in the neighborhood over the last few months and most have probably seen the report on the news of the man that followed a neighborhood girl and attempted to lure her into his truck. This person has approached at least two other teenage girls in Altamonte.

The information shared is as follows:

Attempted abduction:

The male is an older male, chubby build, has white / light colored hair, and spoke Spanish to the girl asking her to get in the truck.  He was driving a commercial truck with an aluminum flat bed with wood rails and had a hose reel with a red hose in the bed.  He has also been seen with a younger man, thin build with dark hair and dark skin. He also spoke Spanish to the girl attempting to coax her into the truck.  Thank God these young ladies kept their wits and ran for help from neighbors in all instances.

The break-ins:

They are happening during the day through a rear window or door.It is always during the time when the resident is not home. We have one reported attempt where someone was home and caught the intruder off guard before they entered the house.  The description is a tall person with a thin build wearing a grey hoodie.  The police think the person doing the break-ins are watching the homes and learning the coming and going of the resident.  One resident had an alarm system but the burglar still broke through a window and entered the home.  ASPD is asking everyone to pay close attention to cars or persons that are loitering in the neighborhood and paying too close attention to homes.  They may be posing as cable, telephone, electric persons or even the religious visitors we sometimes get. We can never be too careful as the person could be a female.  If you are approached by a person do not provide anyone with any information about your property, your schedules, etc.  Always contact the company they claim to be representing or call the police.  We have been assured we will not be calling the police too many times for such reports.

Also, to keep you informed, to solicit in the city of Altamonte, you have to register with the city. They check to make sure you do not have a record and issue a City permit that the solicitor must have on them at all times. This permit is issued to the person not to the company they represent.

The San Sebastian HOA is in the process of notifying the city that San Sebastian does not want any solicitors in our neighbor and requesting them to put our neighborhood on the Do Not Solicit list when someone registers with the city.

San Sebastian has a Neighborhood Watch program which is headed up by Rosa Michaels.  She is looking for volunteers please contact her at Rosa Michaels 407-509-5859 or email Rosierrred@aol.com.  She has been patrolling our neighborhood and could use the help.

Also, please register your e-mail address at our website www.mysansebastianhome.com for updates regarding our neighborhood. Let’s stay informed and take back our Neighborhood!!!

15 Feb
Advisory: SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT

On February 2, 2012 at 3:00pm, The Altamonte Springs Police Department responded to the area of SR 434 and San Marie Ave, in reference to a suspicious incident. A 14-year old female juvenile reported she was walking home from school, when approached by a Hispanic male. The vehicle is described as a white pick up truck (possibly Ford), with a homemade wooden bed.

The juvenile stated the male appeared to be in his 30’s or 40’s, tan skinned, dark hair, and no facial hair. He made several comments to her in Spanish, which made her feel uncomfortable. The male continued to follow the juvenile, asking her to get in his truck. The juvenile ignored the male’s attempts to converse, and walked up to a neighbor’s house, at which time police were notified.

This is the second reported incident on this date involving the same circumstances. In both cases the description of the male and vehicle are similar. Anyone who may have additional information, or knows the identity of this male is asked to contact the Altamonte Springs Police Department at (407) 339-2441, or the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office at (407) 665-6650.

UPDATE:

On February 6, 2012, The Altamonte Springs Police Department responded to the area of Vineridge Run and Terraceview Cove, in reference to another suspicious incident. A 14-year old female juvenile reported she was walking home from school and was followed by two males in a white pick up truck (possibly Ford) in the area of Pearl Lake and Bunnel. The juvenile stated one male appeared to be in his 30’s or 40’s, tan skinned, dark hair, and no facial hair; the other appeared to be in his 30’s or 40’s, white hair, and chubby. When the vehicle approached her she ran home and contacted police.

In a continuing effort to locate and indentify the above males and vehicle, the Altamonte Springs Police Department and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office are increasing patrols in these areas and asking residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious incidents to the Altamonte Springs Police Department at (407) 339-2441, or the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office at (407) 665-6650. Neighborhood Watch Update

28 Sep

The S.S. Neighborhood Watch is updating contact information and registering everyone street by street. Please help us with this process.

Your NW Block Captains will always have their ID or DL showing they live here in San Sebastian. Each street is color-coded according to the document at the bottom of this post. When you see your color triangle posted on the board, contact your Block Captain or Rosa Michals (number below) to supply your information. This will allow us to get information out to residents faster than waiting a week or two later for a report.

A Few Basic Safety Tips:

  • Get to know your neighbors.
  • Watch for suspicious behavior or unfamiliar people roaming through the neighborhood.
  • Always call to verify service appointments and be suspicious of people driving generic vehicles instead of marked company trucks.

Recently a local woman came home to find a young man on the side of her house looking at her phone lines. He was not driving a company truck, dressed in a uniform, or wearing a nametag. He said he was working on her phone lines. She went in her house, came right back out and he was gone! She found out later items were missing from her home.

There is absolutely no soliciting in San Sebastian. We have been advised by Altamonte Springs Police Department (ASPD) to call immediately if you are approached or see anyone soliciting in the neighborhood(ASPD 407-339-2441). We had an alert last week that there are thieves posing as solicitors looking for victims going through local neighborhoods.

If you have a preferred time when you like to be contacted, or if would like your contact information taken immediately, please call Rosa Michals. You will be assigned to your Block Captain. We would also like to add more Block Captains, if you are interested please let us know.

Thanks for helping keep our neighborhood safe!
